Galveston Community Workshop Set for October 15 on City’s Future Growth Plan

GALVESTON, TX — September 23, 2026 — Galveston residents are being encouraged to take part in the next phase of the city’s Comprehensive Plan update by attending a community workshop scheduled for Thursday, October 15.

The second Community Workshop will be held from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Historic Galveston Water & Electric Light Community Center, located at 715 30th Street. The event is part of an ongoing effort to gather public input that will help shape the city’s long-term vision.

The Comprehensive Plan update is designed to guide future decisions related to growth, development, infrastructure, housing, transportation, and other key areas. One of the primary outcomes of the planning process will be the creation of a Future Land Use Map, which will play a critical role in determining how and where development is prioritized in the years ahead.

Feedback from the first community workshop, held August 29, revealed that protecting Galveston’s natural resources was the top priority among participants. Additional concerns focused heavily on quality-of-life issues, including improving infrastructure, preserving neighborhood character, increasing housing affordability, expanding transportation options, and balancing the needs of both residents and visitors.

City officials emphasized that while the initial workshop provided valuable insights, broader community participation is essential to ensure a more comprehensive representation of perspectives across the island.

“Galveston is a diverse community with many different experiences, priorities, and ideas about the future,” said City Manager Brian Maxwell. “The workshop gave us an important starting point, but there are many voices we have not yet heard. We want to continue expanding participation and ensure more residents can help shape the plan.”

Residents who were unable to attend the first workshop are encouraged to get involved through several available options. In addition to attending the October 15 workshop, individuals and organizations can host their own discussions using a “meeting-in-a-box” toolkit developed by the project team. Printed versions of the toolkit are available for pickup at City Hall.

Community members may also participate online by completing activities and submitting feedback through the project’s digital engagement platform. The deadline to participate online is October 2.
